Today's Verse:

           ( Psalm 107:1-2 )

In Praise of God's Goodness

"Give thanks to the Lord, because he is good; His love is eternal!" Repeat these words in praise to the Lord, all you whom he has saved.

Entrance Hymn:

Let Us Pray

Recite The Doxology:

Glory be to the Father, to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever.  Amen.

Recite The Act of Contrition:

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest in all my sins, not only because of the loss of heaven and the pains of hell, but because they offended You, my God, who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace, to confess my sins, do penance, and amend my life.  Amen.

Recite The Apostles Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty. Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell, and on the third day he rose again in ful- fillment of the scriptures. He ascended into Heaven and sits at the right side of God the Father Almighty. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting.   Amen.

The 1st Reading:

           ( Numbers 11:25-29 )

Moses Chooses Seventy Leaders

Then the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke to Moses. He took some of the spirit he had given to Moses and gave it to the seventy leaders. When the spirit came on them, they began to shout like prophets, but not for long.
Two of the seventy leaders, Eldad and Medad, had stayed in the camp and had not gone out to the Tent. There in the camp the spirit came on them, and they too began to shout like prophets. A young man ran out to tell Moses what Eldad and Medad were doing.
Then Joshua son of Nun, who had been Moses' helper since he was a young man, spoke up and said to Moses, "Stop them, sir!"
Moses answered, "Are you concerned about my interests? I wish that the Lord would give his spirit to all his people and make them all shout like prophets!" Then Moses and the seventy leaders of Israel went back to camp.

Alternate 1st Reading:

               ( Psalm 19:8, 10, 12-14 )

The Law of the Lord

The laws of the Lord are right, and those who obey them are happy. The commands of the Lord are just and give understanding to the mind.
They are more desirable than the finest gold; they are sweeter than the purest honey.
None of us can see our own errors; deliver me, Lord, from hidden faults! Keep me safe, also, from willful sins; don't let them rule over me. Then I shall be perfect and free from the evil of sin.
May my words and my thoughts be acceptable to you, O Lord, my refuge and my redeemer!

The 2nd Reading:

             ( James 5:1-6 )

Warning to the Rich

And now, you rich people, listen to me! Weep and wail over the miseries that are coming upon you! Your riches have rotted away, and your clothes have been eaten by moths. Your gold and silver are covered with rust, and this rust will be a witness against you and will eat up your flesh like fire. You have piled up riches in these last days. You have not paid any wages to those who work in your fields. Listen to their complaints! The cries of those who gather in your crops have reached the ears of God, the Lord Almighty. Your life here on earth has been full of luxury and pleasure. You have made yourselves fat for the day of slaughter. You have condemned and murdered innocent people, and they do not resist you.

Today's Gospel According to:

             ( Mark 9:38-43, 45-48 )

Whoever Is Not against Us Is for Us

John said to him, "Teacher, we saw a man who was driving out demons in your name, and we told him to stop, because he doesn't belong to our group."
"Do not try to stop him," Jesus told them, "because no one who performs a miracle in my name will be able soon afterward to say evil things about me. For whoever is not against us is for us. I as-sure you that anyone who gives you a drink of water because you belong to me will certainly receive a reward.

Temptations to Sin

"If anyone should cause one of these little ones to lose faith in me, it would be better for that person to have a large millstone tied around the neck and be thrown into the sea. So if your hand makes you lose your faith, cut it off! it is better for you to enter life with-out a hand than to keep both hands and go off to hell, to the fire that never goes out. And if your foot makes you lose your faith, cut it off! It is better for you to enter life without a foot than to keep both feet and be thrown into hell. And if you eyes makes you lose faith, take it out! It is better for you to enter the Kingdom of God with only one eye than to keep both eyes and be thrown into hell. There the worms that eat them never die, and the fire that burns them is never out."

This is the word of the Lord

An Interpretation of Today's Readings & Gospel

( By Jessica Mesman Griffith )

The Lord comes down in a cloud to talk to Moses and bestows the spirit upon the others in his camp. But when even those who are not in the camp be gin prophesy, Joshua asks Moses to stop them. Moses refuses because he knows he does not control the Spirit, and he will not jealously guard it. That story is echoed in today's gospel, when John warns Jesus that others have been healing in his name. Jesus does not rebuke those healers who aren't numbered among his followers.
I love the idea that the Holy Spirit moves with that kind of power through creation, through clouds and mighty winds and tongues of fire. It will not be manipulated or restrained. It may come in power and glory to those who are outside of our camp, and its presence may be regarded in as simple a human action as offer-ing, as Christ says, a cup of water to drink.

Recite: The Lord's Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it tis in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but, deliver us from evil. Amen.

May the Peace of the Lord be with You
