Today's Verse:

                  ( Psalm 51:17 )

A Prayer for Forgiveness

My sacrifice is a humble spirit, O God; you will not reject a humble and repentant heart.

Entrance Hymn:

Let Us Pray

Recite The Doxology:

Glory be to the Father, to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever.  Amen.

Recite The Act of Contrition:

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest in all my sins, not only because of the loss of heaven and the pains of hell, but because they offended You, my God, who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace, to confess my sins, do penance, and amend my life.  Amen.

Recite The Apostles Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty. Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell, and on the third day he rose again in ful- fillment of the scriptures. He ascended into Heaven and sits at the right side of God the Father Almighty. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting.   Amen.

The 1st Reading:

                ( Joel 2:12-18 )

A Call to Repentance

"But even now," says the Lord, "repent sincerely and return to me with fasting and weeping and mourning. Let your broken heart show your sorrow; tearing your clothes is not enough."
Come back to the Lord your God. He is kind and full of mercy; he is patient and keeps his promise; he is always ready to forgive and not punish. Perhaps the Lord your God will change his mind and bless you with abundant crops. Then you can offer him grain and wine.
Blow the trumpet on Mount Zion; give orders for a fast and call an assembly! Gather the people together; prepare them for a sacred meeting; bring the old people; gather the children and babies too. Even newly married couples must leave their homes and come. The priests, serving the Lord between the alter and the entrance to the Temple, must weep and pray: "Have pity on your people, Lord. Do not let other nations despise us and mock us by saying, "Where is your God?"

God Restores Fertility to the Land

Then the Lord showed concern for his land; he had mercy on his people.

 Alternate 1st Reading:

                 ( Psalm 51:3-6, 12-14, 17 )

A Prayer for Forgiveness

I recognize my faults; I am always conscious of my sins. I have sinned against you - only against you - and done what you consider evil. So you are right in judging me; you are justified in condemn-ing me. I have been evil from the day I was born; from the time I was conceived, I have been sinful.
Sincerity and truth are what you require; fill my mind with your wisdom.
Give me again the joy that comes from your salvation, and make me willing to obey you. Then I will teach sinners your com-mands, and they will turn back to you.
Spare my life, O God, and save me, and I will gladly proclaim your righteousness.
My sacrifice is a humble spirit, O God; you will not reject a humble repentant heart.

The 2nd Reading:

            ( 2 Corinthians 5:20 - 6:2 )

Friendship with God through Christ

Here we are, then, speaking for Christ, as though God himself were making his appeal through us. We plead on Christ's behalf; let God change you from enemies into his friends! Christ was without sin, but for our sake God made him share our sin in order that in union with him we might share the righteousness of God.
In our work together with God, then, we beg you who have re-ceived God's grace not to let it be wasted. Hear what God says:
"When the time came for me to show you favor, I heard you; when the day arrived for me to save you, I helped you."
Listen! This is the hour to receive God's favor, today is the day to be saved!

Today's Gospel According to:

                 ( Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18 )

Teaching about Charity

"Make certain you do not perform your religious duties in public so that people will see what you do. If you do these things publicly, you will not have any reward from your Father in heaven."
"So when you give something to a needy person, do not make a big show of it, as the hypocrites do in the houses of worship and on the streets. They do it so that people will praise them. I assure you you, they have been already paid in full. But when you help a needy person, do it in such a way that even your closest friend will not know about it. Then it will be a private matter. And your Father, who sees what you do in private, will reward you."

Teaching About Prayer

"When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites! They love to stand up and pray in the houses of worship and on street corners, so that everyone will see them. I assure you, they have already been paid in full. But when you pray, go to your room, close the door, and pray to your Father, who is unseen. And your Father, who sees what you do in private, will reward you."

Teaching About Fasting

"And when you fast, do not put on a sad face as the hypocrites do. They neglect their appearance so that everyone will see that they are fasting. I assure you, they have already been paid in full. When you go without food, wash you face and comb your hair, so that others cannot know that you are fasting - only your Father, who is unseen, will know. And your Father, who sees what you do in private, will reward you."

This is the word of the Lord

An Interpretation of Today's Readings & Gospel
( By Fr. James Stephen Behrens, O.C.S.O. )

On this the first day of Lent, the Church once again enters a season of renewal wherein it hopes, through God's grace, to experi-ence a conversion of heart. It is a conversion that entails a turning of one's heart toward God. Along with other penitential practices that we might be accustomed to, like giving up of certain things or doing our best to attend daily Mass, we might also consider that turning toward God involves two encounters - with God and with our sisters and brothers in Christ.
Lent can and should be a very fruitful time when we make a de-termined effort to forgive those who may have hurt us, and when we make amends to those whom we may have offended. Making peace with God is inseparable from making peace with others. If we do our best to right wrongs during these coming weeks, we will also find peace within ourselves.

Recite: The Lord's Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it tis in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but, deliver us from evil.  Amen.

May the Peace of the Lord be with You

Recessional Song:

The Following is a Contribution From One

Believe me He works in mysterious just happened to me.
Highly Recommended:
Read this in silence. Thank you Lord for everything you've done for me. Forgive me for all of my sins as I forgive those who sinned against me. Heal me from the hurt of my past and present. I love You and need You. Cover me, my family, my friends, my life, and my endeavors and enterprises with Your most precious and holy blood. Give me Your dreams, Lord. Bless and protect everyone who seeks You, needs You, and believes in You.
When you love God and you are not ashamed of Him, good things happen in your life. Show your love for him! Copy and paste this on your wall for a day..
Can I get an Amen? Amen!
