Entrance Hymn:

Let Us Pray

Recite The Doxology:

Glory be to the Father, to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever.  Amen.

Recite The Act of Contrition:

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest in all my sins, not only because of the loss of heaven and the pains of hell, but because they offended You, my God, who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace, to confess my sins, do penance, and amend my life.  Amen.

Recite The Apostles Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty. Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell, and on the third day he rose again in ful- fillment of the scriptures. He ascended into Heaven and sits at the right side of God the Father Almighty. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting.   Amen.

The 1st Reading:

              ( Genesis 9:8-15 )

God's Covenant with Noah

God said to Noah and his sons, "I am now making my cove-nant with you and with your descendants, and with all living beings - all birds and all animals - everything that came out of the boat with you. With these words I make my covenant with  you: I promise that never again will all living beings be destroyed by a flood: never again will a flood destroy the earth. As a sign of this everlasting covenant which I am making with you and with all living beings, I am putting my bow in the clouds. It will be the sign of my covenant with the world. Whenever I cover the sky with clouds and the rainbow appears, I will remember my promise to you and to all the animals that a flood will never again destroy all living beings."

Alternate 1st Reading:

              ( Psalm 25:4-9 )

A Prayer for Guidance and Protection

Teach me your ways, O Lord; make them known to me. Teach me to live according to your truth, for you are my God, that saves me. I always trust in you.
Remember, O Lord, your kindness and constant love which you have shown from long ago. Forgive the sins and errors of my youth. In your constant love and goodness, remember me, O Lord!
Because the Lord is righteous and good, he teaches sinners the path they should follow. He leads the humble in the right way and teaches them his will.

The 2nd Reading:

               ( 1 Peter 3:18-22 )

Suffering for Doing Right

For Christ died for sins once and for all, a good man on behalf of sinners, in order to lead you to God. He was put to death physi-cally, but made alive spiritually, and in his spiritual existence he went and preached to the imprisoned spirits. These were the spirits of those who had not obeyed God when he waited patiently during the days that Noah was building his boat. The few people in the boat - eight in all - were saved by the water, which was a symbol pointing to baptism, which now saves you. It is not the washing off of bodily dirt, but the promise made to God from a good con-science. It saves you through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone to heaven and is at the right side of God, ruling over all angels and heavenly authorities and powers.

Today's Gospel According to:

              ( Mark 1:12-15 )

The Baptism and Temptation of Jesus

At once the Spirit made him go into the desert, where he stayed forty days, being tempted by Satan. Wild animals were there also, but angels came and helped him.

Jesus Calls Four Fisherman

After John had been put in prison, Jesus went to Galilee and preached the Good News from God. "The right time has come," he said, "and the Kingdom of God is near! Turn away from your sins and believe the Good News!"

This is the word of the Lord

An Interpretation of Today's Readings & Gospel
( By Mark Neilsen )

Anywhere our faith in God is challenged will be like a desert. On one hand, "wild beasts" may threaten our physical safety. On the other hand, "angels" minister to us. I ask myself: "Am I more afraid of the wild beasts or appreciative of the presence of angels?" Lent is an annual opportunity to renew our trust in God's presence, despite the threats of earthly forces.
Jesus faced challenges head on, not just in the desert, but throughout his whole life and ministry, all the way to the cross. Sometimes he had to hide from the crowds when some wanted to stone him or others wanted to crown him king for all the wrong reasons. But even when he was rejected as a foolish failure, he relied on the love of his Father.
Almighty God, may our Lenten observance strengthen our faith in your loving presence amid the challenges of our lives.

Recite: The Lord's Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it tis in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but, deliver us from evil.  Amen.

May the Peace of the Lord be with You
