Today's Verse:

               ( Isaiah 49:15-16 )

The Restoration of Jerusalem

So the Lord answers, "Can a woman forget her own baby and not love the child she bore? Even if a mother should forget her child, I will never forget you! I have written your name on the palms of my hands."

Entrance Hymn:

Let Us Pray

Recite The Doxology:

Glory be to the Father, to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever.  Amen.

Recite The Act of Contrition:

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest in all my sins, not only because of the loss of heaven and the pains of hell, but because they offended You, my God, who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace, to confess my sins, do penance, and amend my life.  Amen.

Recite The Apostles Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty. Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell, and on the third day he rose again in ful- fillment of the scriptures. He ascended into Heaven and sits at the right side of God the Father Almighty. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting.   Amen.

The 1st Reading:

             ( Isaiah 60:1-6 )

The Future Glory of Jerusalem

Arise, Jerusalem, and shine like the sun; The glory of the Lord is shining on you! Other nations will be covered by darkness, but on you the light of the Lord will shine; The brightness of his presence will be with you. Nations will be drawn to your light, and kings to the dawning of your new day.
Look around you and see what is happening: Your people are gathering to come home! Your sons will come from far away; Your daughters will be carried like children. You will see this and be filled with joy; You will tremble with excitement. The wealth of nations will be brought to you; From across the sea their riches will come.
Great caravans of camels will come, from Midian and Ephah. They will come from Sheba, bringing gold and incense. People will tell the good news of what the Lord has done!

Alternate 1st Reading:

              ( Psalm 72:1-2, 7-8, 10-13 )

A Prayer for the King

Teach the king to judge with your righteousness, O God; share with him your own justice, so that he will rule over your people with justice and govern the oppressed with righteousness.
May righteousness flourish in his lifetime, and may prosperity last as long as the moon gives light.
His kingdom will reach from sea to sea, from the Euphrates to the ends of the earth.
The kings of Spain and of the islands will offer him gifts; the kings of Sheba and Seba will bring him offerings. All kings will bow down before him; all nations will serve him.
He rescues the poor who call to him, and those who are needy and neglected. He has pity on the weak and poor; he saves the lives of those in need.

The 2nd Reading:

             ( Ephesians 3:2-3, 5-6 )

Paul's Work for the Gentiles

Surely you have heard that God in his grace has given me this work to do for your own good. God revealed his secret plan and made it known to me.
In past times human beings were not told this secret, but God has revealed it now by the Spirit to his holy apostles and prophets. The secret is that by means of the gospel the Gentiles have a part with the Jews in God's blessings; they are members of the same body and share in the promise that God made through Christ Jesus.

Today's Gospel According to:

                ( Matthew 2:1-12 )

Visitors from the East

Jesus was born in the town of Bethlehem in Judea, during the time when Herod was king. Soon afterward, some men who studied the stars came from the East to Jerusalem and asked, "Where is the baby born to be the king of the Jews? We saw his star when it came up in the east, and we have come to worship him."
When king Herod heard about this, he was very upset, and so was everyone else in Jerusalem. He called together all the chief priests and the teachers of the Law and asked them, "Where will the Messiah be born?"
"In the town of Bethlehem in Judea," they answered. "For this is what the prophet wrote: 'Bethlehem in the land of Judah, you are by no means the least of the leading cities of Judah; for from you will come a leader who will guide my people Israel.' "
So Herod called the visitors from the East to a secret meeting and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem with these instructions: "Go and make a careful search for the child; and when you find him, let me know, so that I too may go and worship him."
And so they left, and on their way they saw the same star they had seen in the East. When they saw it, how happy they were, and what joy was theirs! It went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. They went into the house, and when they saw the child with his mother Mary, they knelt down and wor-shipped him. They brought out their gifts of gold frankincense, and myrrh, and presented them to him.
Then they returned to their country by another road, since God had warned them is a dream not to go back to Herod.

This is the word of the Lord

An Interpretation of Today's Readings & Gospel
( By Amy Welborn )

My 12 year-old son and I were in the car, on a dirt road through a forest, on our way to a swimming hole.
"Wait," he said. "is that an owl?"
I stopped the car and looked where he was pointing. All I saw were shades of green leaves and brown trunks and branches. But he insisted. And, after a minute or two, I saw it too - a large owl, sit-ting on a fallen log, far away from the road. We sat quietly and watched. At one point, the owl flew higher and closer, never taking its huge eyes off us.
I would have just driven on by. But my son, always alert to the mysteries that nature holds, had been paying attention, so he was able to see. And so Magi, wise ans observant of God's ways in the world, were led by the light to his son.
Lord, you have revealed yourself to us. May I pay attention and follow the light of your love.

Recite: The Lord's Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it tis in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but, deliver us from evil.  Amen.

May the Peace of the Lord be with You
