Today's Verse:

                 ( Psalm 48:14 )

Zion, the City of God

"This is our God forever and ever; he will lead us for all time to come."

Entrance Hymn:

Let Us Pray

Recite The Doxology:

Glory be to the Father, to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever.  Amen.

Recite The Act of Contrition:

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest in all my sins, not only because of the loss of heaven and the pains of hell, but because they offended You, my God, who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace, to confess my sins, do penance, and amend my life.  Amen.

Recite The Apostles Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty. Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell, and on the third day he rose again in ful- fillment of the scriptures. He ascended into Heaven and sits at the right side of God the Father Almighty. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting.   Amen.

The 1st Reading:

                (Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11 )

Words of Hope

"Come comfort my people," says our God. "Comfort them! Encourage the people of Jerusalem. Tell them they have suffered enough and their sins are now forgiven. I have punished them in full for their sins."
A voice cries out, "Prepare the wilderness a road for the Lord! Clear the way in the desert for our God! Fill every valley; level every mountain. The hills will become a plain, and the rough country will be made smooth. Then the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all people will see it. The Lord himself has promised this."
Jerusalem, go up on a high mountain and proclaim the good news! Call out in a loud voice, Zion; announce the good news! Speak out and do not be afraid. Tell the towns of Judah that their God is coming!
The Sovereign Lord is coming to rule with power, bringing with him the people he has rescued. He will take care of his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs together and carry them in his arms; he will gently lead their mothers.

Alternate 1st Reading:

             ( Psalm 85:9-14 )

A Prayer for the Nation's Welfare

Surely he is ready to save those who honor him, and his saving presence will remain in our land.
Love and faithfulness will meet; righteousness and peace will embrace. Human loyalty will reach up from the earth, and God's righteousness will look down from heaven.
The Lord will make us prosperous, and our land will produce rich harvests. Righteousness will go before the Lord and prepare the path for him.

The 2nd Reading:

           ( 2 Peter 3:8-14 )

The Promise of the Lord's Coming

But do not forget one thing, my dear friends! There is no difference in the Lord's sight between one day and a thousand years; to him the two are the same. The Lord is not slow to do what he has promised, as some think. Instead, he is patient with you, because he does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants all to turn away from their sins.
But the Day of the Lord will come like a thief. On that Day the heavens will disappear will a shrill noise, and heavenly bodies will burn up and be destroyed, and the earth with everything in it will vanish. Since all these things will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people should you be? Your lives should be holy and dedicated to God, and as you wait for the Day of God and do your best to make it come soon - the Day when the heavens will burn up and be destroyed, and the heavenly bodies will be melted by the heat. But we wait for what God has promised: new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness will be at home.
And so my friends, as you wait for that Day, do your best to be pure and faultless in God's sight and to be at peace with him.

Today's Gospel According to:

               ( Mark 1:1-8 )

The Preaching of John the Baptist
This is the Good News about Jesus Christ, the Son of God. It began as the prophet Isaiah had written:
"God said, 'I will send my messenger ahead of you to open the way for you.' Someone is shouting in the desert, 'Get the road ready for the Lord; make a straight path for him to travel!'
So John appeared in the desert, baptizing and preaching. "Turn away from your sins and be baptized," he told the people, "and God will forgive your sins." Many people from the province of Judea and the city of Jerusalem went to hear John. They confessed their sins, and he baptized them in the Jordan River.
John wore clothes made of camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, his food was locusts and wild honey. He an-nounced to the people, "The man who will come after me is much greater than I am. I am not good enough even to bend down and untie his sandals. I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."

This is the word of the Lord

An Interpretation of Today's Readings & Gospel
( By Fr. Kenneth Grabner, C.S.C. )

John the Baptist has a special place in the Bible. He prepared his contemporaries to recognize Jesus just at the time that Jesus began his public ministry. John did this by what he said and by pointing out Jesus as the one who would baptize them with the Holy Spirit. Truly, John's life was a gift for all those who heard and accepted what he said.
In every age, gifted people have prepared the way for their con-temporaries to know and accept Christ. Authors of books on spirituality have done that for me, along with my parents, spiritual mentors and close friends. By what they said and the way they lived, they helped me know Christ better and to deepen my rela-tionship with him. Who has done this for you? How have you done this for others?
Lord, may  be grateful for all I've received and for all I've been able to give.

Recite: The Lord's Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it tis in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but, deliver us from evil.  Amen.

May the Peace of the Lord be with You

Highly Recommended:
Read this in silence. Thank you Lord for everything you've done for me. Forgive me for all of my sins as I forgive those who sinned against me. Heal me from the hurt of my past and present. I love You and need You. Cover me, my family, my friends, my life, and my endeavors and enterprises with Your most precious and holy blood. Give me Your dreams, Lord. Bless and protect everyone who seeks You, needs You, and believes in You.
When you love God and you are not ashamed of Him, good things happen in your life. Show your love for him! Copy and paste this on your wall for a day..
Can I get an Amen? Amen!
