LOCASH Talks CMAs Vocal Duo of the Year Nomination & More: 'The Industry Has Finally Embraced Us Completely'

It’s a great time to be the LOCASH guys. After struggling to make a name for themselves musically, the duo of Chris Lucas and Preston Brust finds themselves on the top of the musical world. They recently celebrated their third straight top 20 single on the Country Airplay chart, with their latest, “Ring On Every Finger,” reaching No. 16 on the Sept. 30-dated chartxn. In addition, the duo finds themselves in the running for Vocal Duo of the Year at next week’s CMA Awards for the first time.
“It's just a really blessed time in our lives,” exclaimed Brust to Billboard. "We've worked hard for this moment, and we're enjoying every single minute. It's humbling and we're honored. It feels like the industry has finally embraced us completely. You know, the CMAs, it just doesn't get any bigger than that. And this year, we were also able to get the CMT nomination, the ACM nomination and then the trifecta, the CMA, so it's a complete year for us this year.”

But, as monumental as that event was in their lives, it wasn’t the number-one thing on Lucas’s mind on Labor Day morning. His third child, daughter Violet, was born. “My wife starts screaming and I think something's wrong because we had just had our daughter, and she goes, ‘You just got nominated for a CMA!’ I totally didn't even put it all together," he recalls. "I then realized that the announcement was today. I totally forgot. It was just a real moment, man. I had tears in my eyes and, you know, me and Preston had worked so hard for this moment, and whether we win it or not, it doesn't even matter. Just to be even nominated for such award is an unbelievable feeling. It is good to be nominated.”
Not only is the current single continuing to get airplay at radio, but according to Brust, there’s another side effect of its’ success: “It's been getting a lot of people engaged, as well. Thomas Rhett wrote this song with Josh Kear and Jesse Frasure. The first day we heard it, we knew that this was a romantic love message that we wanted to share on the radio with folks. And it's worked perfectly.”
So what has been the ultimate highlight for LOCASH so far? Burst says he can’t single one out. “You know, it's hard to put our finger on just one moment. I would have to say, playing the Grand Ole Opry for the first time is like graduating in to country music. I remember the first time we played Times Square on New Years' Eve in New York City. That was a big turning point for our career. We had an independent record out at the time and overnight, we became the highest-selling musical act on CD Baby. There's so many pivotal moments that culminate and add up to this nomination for CMA duo of the year. We’re just trying to gear up for the next single, and keep the ball rolling.”

This year has found LOCASH in some impressive touring company as well, being a part of several dates with Faith Hill and Tim McGraw on their Soul 2 Soul tour. Lucas says that experience has been just like you would think it would be.
“That was an honor, going on tour with them, and being just part of this whole tour that we've always heard about," he gushes. "Then you come off stage, and Tim's back there giving you high-fives, and Faith is giving you hugs, saying that she's a fan and supporting us. It meant so much to us and to our career, as well as to our families and to our record label to see that moment happen. They are just the best folks. They made us feel more like family, rather than an opener on that tour. Hopefully, we will get to go out there with them again.”
Along with their CMA nomination, LOCASH were just announced as hosts for this year's pre-telecast special. The CMA Awards broadcast live on ABC on Nov. 8 at 8 p.m. ET.
