September 3, 2017
Twenty-Second Sunday
in Ordinary Time
"Intimacy With God"

Today's Verse:

             ( Psalm 32:8 )

Confession and Forgiveness

The Lord says, "I will teach you the way you should go; I will instruct you and advise you.

Entrance Hymn:

Let Us Pray

Recite The Act of Contrition:

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest in all my sins, not only because of the loss of heaven and the pains of hell, but because they offended You, my God, who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace, to confess my sins, do penance, and amend my life.  Amen

Recite The Apostles Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty. Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell, and on the third day he rose again in ful- fillment of the scriptures. He ascended into Heaven and sits at the right side of God the Father Almighty. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting.   Amen.

The 1st Reading:

             ( Jeremiah 20:7-9 )

Jeremiah Complains to the Lord

Lord, you have deceived me, and I was deceived. You are stronger than I am, and you have overpowered me. Everyone makes fun of me; they laugh at me all day long.
Whenever I speak, I have to cry out and shout, "Violence! Destruction!" Lord I am ridiculed and scorned all the time because I proclaim your message. But when I say, "I will forget the Lord and no longer speak in his name," then your message is like fire burning deep within me. I try my best to hold it in, but can no longer keep it back."

Alternate 1st Reading:

              ( Psalm 63:2-6, 8-9 )

Longing for God

Let me see you in the sanctuary; let me see how mighty and glorious you are. Your constant love is better than life itself, and so I will praise you. I will give you thanks as long as I live; I will raise my hands to you in prayer. My soul will feast and be satisfied, and I will sing glad songs of praise to you.
As I lie in bed, I remember you; all night long I think of you.
I cling to you, and your hand keeps me safe. Those who are trying to kill me will go down to the world of the dead.

The 2nd Reading:

               ( Romans 12:1-2 )

Life in God's Service

So then, my friends, because of God's great mercy to us I ap-peal to you; Offer yourselves as a living sacrifice to God, dedi-cated to his service and pleasing to him. This is the true worship that you should offer. Do not conform yourselves to the standards of this world, but let God transform you inwardly by a complete change of your mind. Then you will be able to know the will of God - what is good and is pleasing to him and is perfect.

Today's Gospel According to:

           ( Matthew 16:21-27 )

Jesus Speaks about His Suffering and Death

From that time on Jesus began to say plainly to his disciples, "I must go to Jerusalem and suffer much from the elders, the chief priests, and the teachers of the Law. I will be put to death, but three days later I will be raised to life."
Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. "God forbid it, Lord!" he said. "That must never happen to you!"
Jesus turned around and said to Peter, "Get away from me, Sa-tan! You are an obstacle in my way, because these thoughts of yours don't come from God, but from human nature."
Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If any of you want to come with me, you must forget yourself, carry your cross, and follow me. For if you want to safe your own life, you will lose it; but if you lose your life for my sake, you will find it. Will gain anything if you win the whole world but lose your life? Of course not! There is nothing you can give to regain your life. For the Son of Man is about to come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he will reward each one according to his deeds."

This is the word of the Lord

An Interpretation of Today's Readings & Gospel
( By Sr. Melannie Svoboda, S.N.D. )

What is intimacy with God? And how do we know if we have it?
Intimacy with God means we have a deep personal relationship with God. Today's readings offer some signs of such intimacy. In Jeremiah's prayer, he is honest with God. "You duped me" (Jeremiah 20:7), he says. Then he describes the suffering he has en-dured for being God's prophet. Jeremiah tries to convince himself to resign as a prophet and never speak of God again. But he can't. When he tries, his heart becomes like a burning fire. Two signs of intimacy with God then are honesty and passion.
The psalmist gives us another sign of intimacy with God. He says to God, "For you my flesh pines and my soul thirsts" (verse 2). Intimacy involves our whole person. Paul says intimacy with God means offering our bodies as a living sacrifice to God. And Jesus adds a few more signs of intimacy with God: thinking as God thinks, taking up our cross and following Jesus.

Recite: The Lord's Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it tis in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but, deliver us from evil.  Amen.

May the Peace of the Lord be with You
