The Transfiguration
Of The Lord
'Courage to Descend'
( 1 Thessalonians 4:16 )
The Lord's Coming
There will be the shout of command, the archangel's voice, the sound of God's trumpet, and the Lord himself will come down from heaven. Those who have died believing in Christ will rise to life first.
Entrance Hymn:
Let Us Pray
Recite The Act of Contrition:
O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest
in all my sins, not only because of the loss of heaven and the pains of
hell, but because they offended You, my God, who art all good and
deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace,
to confess my sins, do penance, and amend my life. Amen
Recite The Apostles Creed:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty. Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell, and on the third day he rose again in fulfillment of the scriptures. He ascended into Heaven and sits at the right side of God the Father Almighty. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen.
The 1st Reading:
( Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14 )
The Vision of the One Who Has Been Living Forever
While I was looking, thrones were put in place. One who had been living forever sat down on one of the thrones. His clothes were white as snow, and his hair was like pure wool. His throne mounted on fiery wheels, was blazing with fire, and a stream of fire was pouring out from it. There were many thousands of people there to serve him, and millions of people stood before him. The court began its session, and the books were opened.
During this vision in the night, I saw what looked like a human being. He was approaching me, surrounded by clouds, and he went to the one who had been living forever and was presented to him. He was given authority, honor, and royal power, so that the people of all nations, races, and languages would serve him. His authority would last forever, and his kingdom would never end.
Alternate 1st Reading:
( Psalm 97:1-2, 5-6, 9 )
God the Supreme Ruler
The Lord is king! Earth, be glad! Rejoice, you islands of the sea! Clouds and darkness surround him; he rules with righteous-ness and justice.
The hills melt like wax before the Lord, before the Lord of all the earth. The heavens proclaim his righteousness, and all nations see his glory.
Lord Almighty, you are the ruler of all the earth; you are much greater than all the gods.
The 2nd Reading:
( 2 Peter 1:16-19 )
Eyewitnesses of Christ's Glory
We have not depended on made-up stories in making known to you the mighty coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. With our own eyes we saw his greatness. We were there when he was given honor and glory by God the Father, when the voice came to him from the Supreme Glory, saying, "This is my own dear Son, with whom I am pleased!" We ourselves heard this voice coming from heaven, when we were with him on the holy mountain.
So we are even more confident of the message proclaimed by the prophets. You will do well to pay attention to it, because it is like a lamp shining in a dark place until the day dawns and the light of the morning star shines in your hearts.
Today's Gospel According to:
( Matthew 17:1-9 )
( Matthew 17:1-9 )
The Transfiguration
Six days later Jesus took with him Peter and the brothers James and John and led them up a high mountain where they were alone. As they looked on, a change came over Jesus: his face was shining like the sun, and his clothes were dazzling white. Then the three disciples saw Moses and Elijah talking with Jesus. So Peter spoke up and said to Jesus, "Lord, how good it is that we are here! If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah."
While he was talking, a shining cloud came over them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my own dear Son, with whom I am pleased - listen to him!"
When the disciples heard the voice, they were so terrified that they threw themselves face downward on the ground. Jesus came to them and touched them. "Get up," he said. "Don't be afraid!" So they looked up and saw no one there but Jesus.
As they came down the mountain, Jesus ordered them, "Don't tell anyone about this vision you have seen until the Son of Man has been raised from death."
This is the word of the Lord
An Interpretation of Today's Readings & Gospel
( By Sr. Bridget Haase, O.S.U. )
In moments of spiritual transfiguration, we may desire, like Peter, to build a tent to secure and protect what we experience, to linger in its glory, to savor and prolong its unexpected wonder. But true transformation is the slow process of coming down the moun-tain. It entails stirring ourselves up from a drowsy attitude, becom-ing fully awake to life and the demands of Jesus' call. It happens in the monotony of repetitive duties and everyday responsibilities.
Building a tent on a summit is far easier than coming down from a spiritual mountain into life's valleys of trusting surrender and loving service. But, with its graced memory in our heart and strengthened by the power of our awestruck experience, may we courageously descend.
Recite: The Lord's Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom
come, Thy will be done, on earth as it tis in heaven. Give us this day
our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who
trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but, deliver us
from evil. Amen.
May the Peace of the Lord be with You
