  Welcome to the
"Country Chapel"
March 19, 2017
Third Sunday of
"Why Do You Believe"

Today's Verse:
          ( Luke 19:38 )

"God bless the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory to God!"

Entrance Hymn:

Recite:   "The Apostles Creed"

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell, and on the third day he arose from the dead and ascended into Heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.  Amen.

"Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just"

The 1st Reading:

                 ( Exodus 17:3-7 )

Water from the Rock

But the people were very thirsty and continued to complain to Moses. They said, "Why did you bring us out of Egypt? To kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?"
Moses prayed earnestly to the Lord and said, "What can I do with these people? They are almost ready to store me."
The Lord said to Moses, "Take some of the leaders of Israel with you, and go on ahead of the people. Take along the sick with which you struck the Nile. I will stand before you on a rock at Mount Sinai. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink." Moses did so in the presence of the leaders of Israel.
The place was named Massah and Meribah, because the Israelites complained and put the Lord to the test when they asked, "Is the Lord with us or not?"

Alternate 1st Reading:

                    ( Psalm 95:1-2, 6-9 )

A Song of Praise

Come, let us praise the Lord! Let us sing for joy to God, who protects us! Let us come before him with thanksgiving and sing joyful songs of praise.
Come, let us bow down and worship him; let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker! He is our God; we are the people he cares for, the flock for which he provides.
Listen today to what he says: "Don't be stubborn, as your an- cestors were at Meribah, as they were that day in the desert at Massah. There they put me to the test and tried me, although they had seen what I did for them."

 The 2nd Reading:

                ( Romans 5:1-2, 5-8 )

Right With God

Now that we have been put right with God through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. He has brought us by faith into this experience of God's grace, in which we now live. And so we boast of hope we have of sharing God's glory!
This hope does not disappoint us, for God has poured out his love into our hearts by means of the Holy Spirit, who is God's gift to us.
For when we were still helpless, Christ died for the wicked at the time that God chose. It was a difficult thing for someone to die for a righteous person. It may even be that someone might dare to die for a good person. But God has shown us how much he loves us - it was while we were still sinners that Christ died for us!

 Today's Gospel According to:

                    ( John4:5-14 )

The Healing at the Pool

A man was there who had been sick for thirty-eight years. Jesus saw him lying there, and he knew that the man had been sick for such a long time; so he asked him, "Do you want to get well?"
The sick man answered, "Sir, I don't have anyone here to put me in the pool when the water is stirred up; while I am trying to get in, somebody else gets there first."
Jesus said to him, "Get up, pick up your mat, and walk." Immediately the man got well; he picked up his mat and started walking.
The day this happened was a Sabbath, so the Jewish authorites told the man who had been healed, "This is a Sabbath, and it is against our Law for you to carry your mat."
He answered, "The man who made me well told me to pick up my mat and walk."
They asked him, "Who is the man who told you to do this?"
But the man who had been healed did not know who Jesus was, for there was a crowd in that place, and Jesus had slipped away.
Afterward, Jesus found him in the Temple and said, "Listen, you are well now; so stop sinning or something worse may happen to you."

This is the word of the Lord.

An Interpretation of Today's Readings & Gospel
( By Msgr. Stephen J. Rossetti )

Did you ever stop to wonder why you believe? While we can typically point to human supports for our faith, there is a mysteri- ous, inexplicable quality to it. Reading the gospels, it is remarkable that Jesus simply speaks with people and they come to believe.
But this Word is no ordinary speech. Despite the lack of world- ly proof, we sense in a very deep way that it is true. Just as Jesus spoke to the woman at the well and she received the faith, so, too, has he spoken to us.
And this Word in us is not static. It is a dynamic presence. Jesus said it is, "A spring of water welling up to eternal life" (verse 14). As the Word gushes forth, our hearts overflow with joy and life.

Recite: The Lord's Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it tis in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but, deliver us from evil.  Amen.

May the Peace of the Lord be with You

Recessional Song:

Believe me He works in mysterious just happened to me.
