Sixth Sunday in
Ordinary Time
'Gift of Reconciliation'

Today's Verse:
                    ( 1 John 3:8 )

      Children of God

Whoever continues to sin belongs to the Devil, because the Devil has sinned from the very beginning. The Son of God ap- peared for this very reason, to destroy what the Devil had done.

 Entrance Hymn:

Recite:   "The Apostles Creed"

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell, and on the third day he arose from the dead and ascended into Heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.  Amen.

"Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just"

 The 1st Reading:

                ( Sirach 15:15-20 )
{ Not available in the King James Bible }

Free Will

If you want to, you can keep the Lord's commands. You can decide whether you will be loyal to him or not. He has placed fire and water before you; reach out and take whichever you want. You have a choice between life and death; you will get whichever you choose. The Lord's wisdom and power are great and he sees every-thing. He is aware of everything a person does, and he takes care of those who fear him. He has never commanded anyone to be wicked or given anyone permission to sin.

Alternate 1st Reading:

                ( Psalm 119:1-2, 4-5, 17-18, 33-34 )

The Law of the Lord

Happy are those whose lives are faultless, who live according to the law of the Lord. Happy are those who follow his commands, who obey him with all their heart.
Lord, you have given us your laws and told us to obey them faithfully. How I hope that I shall be faithful in keeping your instructions!

Happiness in the Law of the Lord

Be good to me, your servant, so that I may live and obey your teachings. Open my eyes, so that I may see the wonderful truths in your law.

A Prayer for Understanding

Teach me, Lord, the meaning of your laws, and I will obey them at all times. Explain your law to me, and I will obey it; I will keep it with all my heart.

 The 2nd Reading:

                 ( 1 Corinthians 2:6-10 )
God's Wisdom
Yet I do proclaim a message of wisdom to those who are spiritually mature. But is not the wisdom that belongs to this world or to the powers that rule this world - powers that are losing their power. The wisdom I proclaim is God's secret wisdom, which is hidden from human beings, but which he had already chosen for our glory even before the world was made. None of the rulers of this world knew this wisdom. If they had known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. However, as the scripture says, "What no one ever saw or heard, what no one ever thought could happen, is the very thing God prepared for those who love him." But it was to us that God made known his secret by means of his Spirit. The Spirit searches everything, even the hidden depths of God's purposes.

Today's Gospel According to:

                ( Matthew 5:17-37 )

Teaching About the Law

"Do not think that I have come to do away with the Law of Moses and the teachings of the prophets. I have not come to do away with them, but to make their teachings come true. Remember that as long as heaven and earth last, not the least point nor the smallest detail of the Law will be done away with - not until the end of all things. So then, whoever disobeys even the least important of the commandments and teaches others to do the same, will be the least in the Kingdom of heaven. On the other hand, whoever obeys the Law and teaches others to do the same, will be great in the Kingdom of heaven. I tell you, then, that you will be able to enter the Kingdom of heaven only if you are more faithful than the teachers of the Law and the Pharisees in doing what God requires."

Teaching About Anger

"You have heard that people were told in the past, 'Do not com- mit murder; anyone who does will be brought to trial.' But now I tell you; if you are angry with your brother you will be brought to trial, if you call your brother 'You good-for-nothing!' you will be brought before the Council, and if you call your brother a worthless fool you will be in danger of going to the fire of hell. So if you are about to offer your gift to God at the alter and there you remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the alter, go at once and make peace with your brother, and then come back and offer your gift to God."
"If someone brings a lawsuit against you and takes you to court, settle the dispute while there is time, before you get to the court. Once you are there, you will be turned over to the judge, who will hand you over to the police, and you will be put in jail. There you will stay, I tell you, until you pay the last penny of your fine."

Teaching About Adultery

"You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.' But now I tell you; anyone who looks at a woman and wants to possess her is guilty of committing adultery with her in his heart. So if your right eye causes you to sin, take it out and throw it away! It is much better for you to lose a part of your body than to have your whole body thrown into hell. If your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away! It is much better for you to lose one of your limbs than to have your whole body go off to hell."

Teaching About Divorce
(Matthew 19:9; Mark 10:11-12; Luke 16:18)

"It was also said, 'Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a written notice of divorce.' But now I tell you; if a man divorces his wife for any cause other than her unfaithfulness, then he is guilty of making her commit adultery if she marries again; and the man who marries her commits adultery also."

Teaching About Vows

"You have also heard that people were told in the past, 'Do not break your promise, but do what you have vowed to the Lord to do.' But now I tell you; do not use any vow when you make a promise. Do not swear by heaven, for it is God's throne; nor by earth, for it is the resting place for his feet; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. Do not even swear by your head, because you cannot make a single hair white or black. Just say 'Yes' or 'No' - anything else you say comes from the Evil One."

This is the word of the Lord.

An Interpretation of Today's Readings & Gospel
( By Sr. Macrina Wiederkehr, O.S.B. )

How many times have you read this Scripture text or heard it read to you? Perhaps the better question would be, how many times have you really listened to these words? Indeed, how often are you even aware of bringing your gift to the alter? What are the gifts you bring? Bread and wine to be consecrated into Christ, yes, but there are other gifts you might bring; your joy and gratitude, your sorrow, your willingness to live with a whole heart, your desire to be trans-formed. There are hundreds of gifts in you waiting to be offered. Put them on the altar, in the chalice and onto the offering plate.
Strive to live with the kind of awareness that transforms your offering into a Christ Presence; then, check your heart for any kind of reconciliation that needs to take place in your life.

Recite: The Lord's Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it tis in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but, deliver us from evil.  Amen.

May the Peace of the Lord be with You
