Today's Verse:

              ( James 1:5 )

Faith and Wisdom

But if any of you lack wisdom, you should pray to God, who will give it to you; because God gives generously and graciously to all.

Entrance Hymn:

Let Us Pray

Recite The Doxology:

Glory be to the Father, to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever.  Amen.

Recite The Act of Contrition:

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest in all my sins, not only because of the loss of heaven and the pains of hell, but because they offended You, my God, who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace, to confess my sins, do penance, and amend my life.  Amen.

Recite The Apostles Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty. Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell, and on the third day he rose again in ful- fillment of the scriptures. He ascended into Heaven and sits at the right side of God the Father Almighty. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting.   Amen.

The 1st Reading:

              ( Jeremiah 33:14-16 )

Another Promise of Hope

The Lord said,"The time is coming when I will fulfill the promise that I made to the people of Israel and Judah. At that time I will choose as king a righteous descendant of David. That king will do what is right and just throughout the land. The people of Judah and of Jerusalem will be rescued and will live in safety. The city will be called 'The Lord Our Salvation.' "

Alternate 1st Reading:

           ( Psalm 25:4-5, 8-10, 14 )

A Prayer for Guidance and Protection

Teach me your ways, O Lord; make them known to me. Teach me to live according to your truth, for you are my God, who saves me. I always trust in you.
Because the Lord is righteous and good, he teaches sinners the path they should follow. He leads the humble in the right way and teaches them his will. With faithfulness and love he leads all who keep his covenant and obey his commands.
The Lord is the friend of those who obey him and he affirms his covenant with them.

The 2nd Reading:

             ( 1 Thessalonians 3:12 - 4.2 )

Paul's Desire to Visit Them Again

May the Lord make your love for on another and for all people grow more and more and become as great as our love for you. In this way he will strengthen you, and you will be perfect and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all who be long to him.

A Life That Pleases God

Finally, our friends, you learned from us how you should live in order to please God. This is, of course, the way you have been living. And now we beg and urge you in the name of the Lord Jesus to do even more.

Today's Gospel According to:

                ( Luke 21:25-28, 34-36 )

The Coming of the Son of Man

"There will be strange things happening to the sun, the moon, and the stars. On earth whole countries will be in despair, afraid of the roar of the sea and the raging tides. People will faint from fear as they wait for what is coming over the whole earth, for the powers in space will be driven from their courses. Then the Son of Man will appear, coming in a cloud with great power and glory. When these things begin to happen, stand up and raise your heads, because your salvation is near."

The Need to Watch

"Be careful not to let yourselves become occupied with too much feasting and drinking and with the worries of this life, or that Day may suddenly catch you like a trap. For it will come upon all people everywhere on earth. Be on watch and pray always that you will have the strength to go safely through all those things that will happen and stand before the Son of Man."

This is the word of the Lord

An Interpretation of Today's Readings & Gospel

( By Fr. James Stephen Behrens, O.C.S.O. )

It was an ordinary day. I asked three monks if I could take their picture. One of them asked, "Why do you want a picture of us on such an uneventful day?"
I thought for a few seconds and replied, "Because I won't be able to get this photograph tomorrow."
Augustine, one of the monks and our abbot, said he would have to remember that line.
Advent is a time when we are asked by the Church to awaken from our drowsiness and be alert, be watchful. This is a season that comes around once a year. It is an opportune time to rouse our sleeping hearts and ready ourselves for the Lord. These days are a reminder to live as best we can for this one day - for we will not have the chance once it is past.

Recite: The Lord's Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it tis in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but, deliver us from evil. Amen.

May the Peace of the Lord be with You
