Today's Verse:

            ( John 3:16 )

Jesus and Nicodemus

For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not die but have eternal life.

Entrance Hymn:

Let Us Pray

Recite The Doxology:

Glory be to the Father, to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever.  Amen.

Recite The Act of Contrition:

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest in all my sins, not only because of the loss of heaven and the pains of hell, but because they offended You, my God, who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace, to confess my sins, do penance, and amend my life.  Amen.

Recite The Apostles Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty. Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell, and on the third day he rose again in ful- fillment of the scriptures. He ascended into Heaven and sits at the right side of God the Father Almighty. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting.   Amen.

The 1st Reading:

             ( Genesis 2:18- 24 )

The Garden of Eden

Then the Lord God said, "It is not good for the man to live alone. I will make a suitable companion to help him." So he took some soil from the ground and formed all the animals and all the birds. Then he brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and that is how they all got their names. So the man named all the birds and all the animals; but not one of them was a suitable companion to help him.
Then the Lord God made the man fall into a deep sleep, and while he was sleeping, he took out one of the man's ribs and closed up the flesh. He formed a woman out of the rib ane brought her to him. Then man said, "At last, here is one of my own kind - Bone taken from my bone, flesh from my flesh. 'Woman' is her name be-cause she was taken out of man."
That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united with his wife, and they become one.

Alternate 1st Reading:

            ( Psalm 128:1-6 )

The Reward of Obedience to the Lord

Happy are those who obey the Lord, who live by his com-mands.
Your work will provide for your needs; you will be happy and prosperous. Your wife will be like a fruitful vine in your home, and your children will be like young olive trees around your table. A man who obeys the Lord will surely be blessed like this.
May the Lord bless you from Zion! May you see Jerusalem prosper all the days of your life! May you live to see your grand-children!
      Peace be with Israel!

The 2nd Reading:

             ( Hebrews 2:9-11 )

The One Who Leads Us to Salvation

But we do see Jesus, who for a little while was made lower than the angels, so that through God's grace he should die for everyone. We see him now crowned with glory and honor because of the death he suffered. It was not only right that God, who creates and preserves all things, should make Jesus perfect through suffering in order to bring many children to share his glory. For Jesus is the one who leads them to salvation.

He purifies people from their sins, and both he and those who are made pure all have the same Father. That is why Jesus is not ashamed to call them his family.

Today's Gospel According to:

            ( Mark 10:2-16 )

Jesus Teaches about Divorce

Some Pharisees came to him and tried to tramp him. "Tell us," they asked, "does our Law allow a man to divorce his wife?"

Jesus answered with a question. "What law did Moses give you?"

Their answer was, "Moses gave permission for a man to write a divorce notice and send his wife away."

Jesus said to them, "Moses wrote this law for you because you are so hard to teach. But in the beginning, at the time of creation, 'God made them male and female,' as the scripture says. 'And for this reason a man will leave his father and mother and unite with his wife, and the two will become one.' So they are no longer two, but one. No human being must separate then, what God has joined together."

When they went back into the house, the disciples asked Jesus about this matter. He said to them, "A man who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against his wife. In the same way, a woman who divorces her husband and marries an-other man commits adultery."

Jesus Blesses Little Children

Some people brought children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples scolded the people. When Jesus noticed this, he was angry and said to his disciples, "Let the children come to me, and do not stop them, because the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I assure you that whoever does not receive the Kingdom of God like a child will never enter it." Then he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on each of them, and blessed them.

This is the word of the Lord

An Interpretation of Today's Readings & Gospel

( By Sr. Joyce Rupp, O.S.M. )

The disciples assumed they knew what Jesus wanted and needed. Consequently, they decided the children would distract from his teaching and tried to shove the young ones away. So convinced were they about this false idea, they even went so far as to scold the adults who were bringing the children. How surprised the disciples must have been when they heard Jesus encourage the little ones to come to him. This situation reminds me of how I, too, can misunderstand and presume what God desires. This happens when I insist on my plans and endeavors going the way I want them to, in spite of evidence to the contrary. When the day fills with dis-ruptions and disturbances, that is when I am called to go beyond my presumptions and consider the fact that the Spirit might have something else in mind. I cannot assume my ways are God's ways just because I have decided what I want.

Recite: The Lord's Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it tis in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but, deliver us from evil. Amen.

May the Peace of the Lord be with You
