Watchful Servants

"And you, too, must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you are not expecting him."

Entrance Hymn:

Let Us Pray

Recite The Doxology:

Glory be to the Father, to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever.  Amen.

Recite The Act of Contrition:

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest in all my sins, not only because of the loss of heaven and the pains of hell, but because they offended You, my God, who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace, to confess my sins, do penance, and amend my life.  Amen.

Recite The Apostles Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty. Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell, and on the third day he rose again in ful- fillment of the scriptures. He ascended into Heaven and sits at the right side of God the Father Almighty. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting.   Amen.

The 1st Reading:

              ( Exodus 24:3-8 )

The Covenant is Sealed

Moses went and told the people the Lord's commands and all the ordinances, and all the people answered together, "We will do everything the Lord has said." Moses wrote down all the Lord's commands. Early the next morning he built an alter at the foot of the mountain and set up twelve stones, one for each of the twelve tribes of Israel. Then he sent young men, and they burned sacrifices to the Lord and sacrificed some cattle as fellowship offering. Moses took half of the blood of the animals and put it in bowls; and the other half he threw against the alter. Then he took the book of cov-enant, in which the Lord's commands were written, and read it aloud to the people. They said, "We will obey the Lord and do everything that he has commanded."
Then Moses took the blood in the bowls and threw it on the people. He said, "This is the blood that seals the covenant which the Lord made with you when he gave all these commands."

Alternate 1st Reading:

            ( Psalm 116:12-13, 15-18 )

Someone Saved from Death Praises God

What can I offer the Lord for all his goodness to me? I will bring a wine offering to the Lord, to that him for saving me.
How painful it is to the Lord when one of his people dies! I am your servant, Lord; I serve you just as my mother did. You saved me from death. I will give you a sacrifice of thanksgiving and offer my prayer to you. In the assembly of all your people, in the sanc-tuary of your Temple in Jerusalem, I will give you what I have promised.

The 2nd Reading:

             ( Hebrews 9:11-15 )

Earthly and Heavenly Worship

But Christ has already come as the High Priest of the good things that are already here. The tent in which he serves is greater and more perfect; it is not a tent made by human hands, that is, it is not a part of this created world. When Christ went through the tent and entered once and for all into the Most Holy Place, he did not take the blood of goats and bulls to offer as a sacrifice; rather, he took his own blood and obtained eternal salvation for us. The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a burnt calf are sprinkled on the people who are ritually unclean, and this purifies them by taking away their ritual impurity. Since this is true, how much more is ac-complished by the blood of Christ! Through the eternal Spirit he offered himself as a perfect sacrifice to God.
For this reason Christ is the one who arranges a new covenant , so that those who have been called by God may receive the eternal blessings that God has promised. This can be done because there has been a death which sets people free from the wrongs they did while the first covenant was in effect.

Today's Gospel According to:

           ( Mark 14:12-16, 22-26 )

Jesus Eats the Passover Meal with His Disciples

On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the day the lambs for the Passover meal were killed, Jesus' disciples asked him, "Where do you want us to go and get the Passover meal ready for you?"
Then Jesus sent two of them with these instructions: "Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house he enters, and say to the owner of the house: 'The Teacher says, Where is the room where my disciples and I will eat the Passover meal?' Then he will show you a large upstairs room, fixed up and furnished, where you will get everything ready for us."
The disciples left, went to the city, and found everything just as Jesus had told them; and they prepared the Passover meal.

The Lord's Supper

While they were eating, Jesus took a piece of bread, gave prayer and thanks, broke it, and gave it to the disciples. "Take it," he said, "This is my body."
Then he took the cup, gave thanks to God, and handed it to them; and they all drank from it. Jesus said, "This is my blood which is poured out for many, my blood which seals God's covenant. I tell you, I will never again drink this wine until the day I drink the new vine in the Kingdom of God."
Then they sang a hymn and went to the Mount of Olives.

This is the word of the Lord

An Interpretation of Today's Readings & Gospel
( By Fr. James Stephen Behrens, O.C.S.O. )

In many, if not all, religious traditions, the sharing of a meal is a celebration rich in symbolism. The Eucharist and Passover are bearers of the shared memories of a people. God reveals himself through the communal ritual of drinking and eating. Through the Eucharist, we believe that God remembers himself for us. He is brought to our midst and once again nourishes us with his very flesh and blood. We consume his life, and he becomes, very inti-mately, a living part of us. When we leave the sacred and reim-merse ourselves into the seemingly mundane routines of life, we bear God within us - a God who lived, died and rose for us so that we might live the same mystery for and with each other. The body and blood of Jesus is indeed food for our journey through life.

Recite: The Lord's Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it tis in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but, deliver us from evil.  Amen.

May the Peace of the Lord be with You
