Today's Verse:

           ( Lamentations 3:22-23 )

Punishment, Repentance, and Hope

The Lord's unfailing love and mercy still continue. Fresh as the morning, as sure as the sunrise.

 Entrance Hymn:

The 1st Reading:

               ( Acts 2:14, 36-41 )

Peter's Message

Then Peter stood up with the other eleven apostles and in a loud voice began to speak to the crow: "Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, listen to me and let me tell you what this means.
"All the people of Israel, then, are to know for sure that this Jesus, whom you crucified, is the one that God has made Lord and Messiah!"
When the people heard this, they were deeply troubled and said to Peter and the other apostles, "What shall we do brothers?"
Peter said to them, "Each one of you must turn away from your sins and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, so that your sins will be forgiven; and you will receive God's gift, the Holy Spirit. For God's promise was made to you and your children, and to all who are far away - all whom the Lord our God calls to himself."
Peter made his appeal to them and with many other words he urged them, saying, "Save yourselves from the punishment coming on this wicked people!" Many of them believed his message and were baptized, and about three thousand people were added to the group that day.

Alternate 1st Reading:

            ( Psalm 23:1-6 )

The Lord Our Shepherd

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For you are with me: Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me; You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord.

The 2nd Reading:

               ( 1 Peter 2:20-25 )

The Example of Christ's Suffering
For what credit is there if you endure the beatings you deserve for having done wrong? But if you endure suffering even when you have done right, God will bless you for it. It was to this that God called you, for Christ himself suffered for you and left you an example, so that you would follow in his steps. He committed no sin, and no one ever heard a lie come from his lips. When he was insulted; he did not answer back with an insult; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but placed his hopes in God, the righteous Judge. Christ himself carried our sins in his body to the cross, so that we might die to sin and live for righteousness. It is by his wounds that you have been healed. You were like sheep that had lost their way, but now you have been brought back to follow the Shepherd and Keeper of your souls.

 Today's Gospel According to:

               ( John 10:1-10 )

The Parable of the Shepherd

Jesus said, "I am telling you the truth: the man who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in some other way, is a thief and a robber. The man who goes in through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him; the sheep hear his voice as he calls his own sheep by name, and he leads them out. When he has brought them out, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him, because they know his voice. They will not follow someone else; instead, they will run away from such a person, because they do not know his voice.
Jesus told them this parable, but they did not understand what it meant.

Jesus the Good Shepherd

So Jesus said again, "I am telling you the truth; I am the gate for the sheep. All others who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Those who come in by me will be saved; they will come in and go out and find pasture. The thief comes only in order to steal, kill, and destroy. I have come in order that you might have life - life in all its fullness.

This is the word of the Lord.

An Interpretation of Today's Readings & Gospel
( By Amy Welborn )

In the heat of summer, we headed to a large swimming hole. One of the ways you could reach the water was by jumping off a steep like bank.
For a time, we watched as one young woman stood on the edge, contemplating a jump. Her friends floated in the water below, encouraging her to follow. She vacillated, moving to the edge, then backing away. Again and again, they called her name.
We had to leave, so we don't know if Chloe ever did jump. I wonder: did she lack courage, or was she heeding her better instincts? What a challenge it is at times to discern which voice to follow. Is it the voice of one that really doesn't care about us at all, or is what I'm hearing the voice of the Shepherd who will protect me, no matter how daunting the distance from here to there might seen?
Jesus, in the quiet, I listen for your loving voice.

Recite: The Lord's Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it tis in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but, deliver us from evil.  Amen.

May the Peace of the Lord be with You

Recessional Song:

Believe me He works in mysterious ways...it just happened to me.
