   Welcome to the
"Country Chapel"
December 18, 2016
The Fourth Sunday
of  Advent
"Faith and Trust"

Today a special audio production of The Gospel Road with Johnny Cash.  You will definitely want to receive the blessing of this.  The movie and the soundtrack tell the story of the life of Jesus. The album consists primarily of spoken-word recordings taken from the film of Cash describing the action on screen, interspersed with occasional songs, including several that are presented in piecemeal form through the album. Additional vocalists featured on varying tracks include The Carter Family, The Statler Brothers, June Carter Cash (who in the film and on the album portrays Mary Magdalene), Kris Kristofferson and Rita Coolidge. Songs performed included several that Cash had previously recorded for records such as The Holy Land and Hello, I'm Johnny Cash ("He Turned the Water Into Wine" and "Jesus Was a Carpenter", respectively), along with cover versions of the Larry Gatlin song "Help Me" (which is titled simply "Help" on this release) and "Follow Me" by John Denver. Cash later recorded a full version of "Help Me" which was included on the posthumous album American V: A Hundred Highways under its complete title.

Today's Verse:   ( Psalm 40:8 )

How I love to do your will, my God! I keep your teachings in my heart.

 Entrance Hymn:

Recite:   "The Apostles Creed"

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell, and on the third day he arose from the dead and ascended into Heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.  Amen.

"Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just"

 The 1st Reading:

               ( Isaiah 7:10-14 )

The Sign of Immanuel

The Lord sent another message to Ahaz: "Ask the Lord your God to give you a sign. It can be from the deep world of the dead or from high up in heaven."
Ahaz answered, "I will not ask for a sign. I refuse to put the Lord to the test."
To that Isaiah replied, "Listen, now, descendants of King David. It's bad enough for you to wear out the patience of people - do you have to wear out God's patience too? Well then, the Lord himself will give you a sigh: a young woman who is pregnant will have a son and will name him 'Immanuel'."

  Alternate 1st Reading:

                ( Psalm 24:1-6 )

The Great King

The world and all that is in it belongs to the Lord; the earth and all that live on it are his. He built it on the deep waters beneath the earth and laid its foundations in the ocean depths.
Who has the right to go up the Lord's hill? Who may enter his holy temple? Those who are pure in act and thought, who do not worship idols or make false promises. The Lord will bless them and save them; God will declare them innocent. Such are the people who come to God, who come into the presence of the God of Jacob.

The 2nd Reading:

               ( Romans 1:1-7 )

Paul's Letter to the Romans

From Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ and an apostle chosen and called by God to preach his Good News.
The Good News was promised long ago by God through his prophets, as written in the Holy Scriptures. It is about his Son, our Lord Jesus Christ; as to his humanity, he was born a descendant of David; as to his divine holiness, he was born with great power to be the Son of God by being raised from death. Through him God gave me the privilege of being an apostle for the sake of Christ, in order to lead people of all nations to believe and obey. This also includes you who are in Rome, whom God has called to belong to Jesus Christ.
      And so I write to all of you in Rome whom God loves and has called to be his own people;
May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace.

Today's Gospel According to:

               ( Matthew 1:18-24 )

                                 The Birth of Jesus Christ

This was how the birth of Jesus Christ took place. His mother Mary was engaged to Joseph, but before they were married, she found out that she was going to have a baby by the Holy Spirit. Joseph was a man who always did what was right, but he did not want to disgrace Mary publicly; so he made plans to break the en- gagement privately. While he was thinking about this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, descendant of David, do not be afraid to take Mary to be your wife. For it is by the Holy Spirit that she has conceived. She will have a son, and you will name him Jesus - because he will save his people from their sins.
Now all this happened in order to make come true what the Lord said through the prophet, "A virgin will become pregnant and have a son, and he will be called Immanuel" (which means, "God is with us").
So Joseph woke up, he married Mary, as the angel of the Lord had told him to. But he had no sexual relations with her before she gave birth to her son. And Joseph named him Jesus.

An Interpretation of Today's Readings & Gospel
( By Fr.Kenneth Grabner, C.S.C. )

The birth of Jesus into our human family was a marvelous proof of God's love for us. And yet, this beatiful gift was overshadowed by a paradox when Joseph discovered that Mary was with child. He decided to divorce her quietly but received a revelation that he was to take her into his home, for the child to be born was conceived by the Holy Spirit. You can imagine Joseph's bewilderment. But he responded to the mystery courageously with faith and trust. And would would have the need to do so again because more mysteries and paradoxes were still to come.
Sometimes we, too, experience mysteries and paradoxes in our lives that tax our understanding. Like Joseph, we can choose to move through them with faith and trust. We can ask for the grace to believe that when the time is right, we will find meaning and peace, just as Joseph did.

Recite: The Lord's Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it tis in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but, deliver us from evil.  Amen.

May the Peace of the Lord be with You
